As we all know, 1958 was a pretty significant year in the guitar world. Little did Ted McCarty and the Gibson executives know what a profound impact on the guitar community—and music in general—they would have when they unveiled their new, attractive cherry sunburst Les Paul at NAMM in July of 1958. While we can look back with unfettered hindsight on what a significant change in direction this was for Gibson, at the time one can only assume that the top brass at Gibson were praying this exotic-looking burst guitar would win back some customers flocking to Fender. And of course, we now know in that in the long run, they were right.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this iconic instrument, Gibson Custom Shop produced some of the most striking examples of custom built, Murphy Aged bursts in 2008. Here we have an example of one of the best. This 50th Anniversary R8 is 92 of 200 and has one of the most beautiful, figured tops we have ever seen on a Les Paul. From any angle this guitar’s flamed heritage cherry maple top gives us goosebumps. Utmost care was taken in the aging process, giving this example a wonderful patina that evokes an aura of hallowed history.
This R8 is equipped with custom BurstBucker pickups that reproduce the PAF pickup quality the ‘Bursts are known for. The pickup response is highly dynamic, allowing a player to utilize the volume and tone controls to achieve a wide variety of tone profiles. Each of the 3-positions really capture the different voices of the pickups perfectly, so you know that you’re getting everything this beast is capable of.
